Every few weeks I run the Skyscanner ‘Everywhere’ option to give me travel inspiration, last year it found me a cheap last minute flight to Jakarta and I booked it immediately. I only really knew about the pristine beaches of Bali and wasn’t sure what else to expect but Indonesia surprised me in so many ways, and my three weeks there were not enough to see and do everything on offer. In fact it’s one of the Six countries I want to visit again. One of my first destinations was Yogyakarta. Jetlagged, I signed up for a full day of sunrise and sunset temple hopping (3am – 7pm) and an all-night volcano hike (10pm-8am). Needless to say I was falling asleep as I hiked up the active volcano, and luckily my guide was keeping an eye on me or I probably would have taken a wrong turn and fallen down the caldera… :/ Exhausted, after the 5 hour ascent I reached the peak of Mount Merapi, and was blessed with sunrise panoramic views of several other volcanos in the distance. We climbed back down and were back in Yogyakarta by midday, I finally napped for a few hours and got an incredible two-hour massage for approx £5/$6/€6 which made my legs feel right as rain. I’d do it all again but in hindsight maybe leave the trek for the following night.
