Guest review: “Shanna’s hogan is truly a special place. After a day of hiking in the Grand Canyon, it was a perfect place to spend the night and remain in the natural landscape. It’s about 3 miles off the highway and yet a world apart. We arrived before the sun set, so it was relatively easy to find, but it would probably be trickier after dark, so plan accordingly.
The accommodations are simple but comfortable, and a lot of thought has gone into providing your basic camping needs – firewood and kindling, flashlights, cookware, cleaning supplies, alarm clock, radio, generator, etc. We were there in March, so the hogan was chilly when we arrived, but the fire warmed up the place very quickly and kept it warm throughout most of the night. (You may want to plan to get up sometime during the night to add another log on the fire, as it did burn out before the morning.)
You should be aware that this is similar to camping (outhouse, no running water) and be prepared for that scenario. I say that because I understand the hogan is a sacred space in Navajo culture, and it would make me sad to see anyone rate it poorly because they were expecting something that it isn’t meant to be.
Shanna lives about a mile away, but beyond that the closest homestead is 25 miles away, so that even on an overcast night, the stars were amazing. Though I never met Shanna in person, she was very communicative and quick during our correspondence.” – Jessie, March 2020

Recent Guest Review: “Dan’s place is amazing! If you’re looking for an awesome glamping experience, this is it. My husband and I had the best time exploring the creek near the cave, and the beds are so comfortable. This is absolutely a camping experience though, so if you aren’t prepared to be in the outdoors, book a hotel instead. But, if you want to be close to nature while still having a comfortable experience, this place is for you!
We were pleasantly surprised to find an abundance of electrical outlets in the cave, but as expected there was no plumbing at the cave. Dan has set up a porter-potty which was perfect for when you needed to use the bathroom during the night, but if you needed running water you would have to hike back up to the house. So again, if you don’t enjoy camping then you won’t have a good time, but for us this was the perfect way to enjoy nature without having to sleep in a tent on the ground.” – Miriam, August 2020
