Hidden Gems in Asia: From Secret Beaches to Lesser Known Regions

Packed with tourist hotspots, Asia could keep a traveler busy for a lifetime. But the region is also home to an astonishing number of scenic, underrated destinations that you really should visit whilst they’re still undiscovered!

Caramoan Islands in Philippines

Off the beaten track, the tropical and deserted Caramoan Islands located in the Bicol region, are rarely visited by foreign travellers who often head to Palawan or El Nido for a beach getaway.

However this remote cluster of islands is characterised by pristine beaches, jagged limestone rocks and crystal clear waters, making it an ideal destination for island hopping.

Where?

After flying one hour from Manila to Legazpi City in Bicol, you must drive three hours to Sabang Port, followed by two hours on a bumpy speed boat to the Caramoan peninsula.

underrated countries in asia – hidden paradise in asia

Why?

The inaccessibility of these paradise islands ensures that their stunning white beaches stay that way, and the Caramoan remains a destination purely for the intrepid. In fact it is so off the beaten path that it is used to film the hit US TV show, Survivor.

Highlights

Spend several days searching for hidden lagoons, coves, secret beaches, and quiet snorkelling spots, and unlike the rest of the country it’s unlikely you’ll come across any other people apart from a few local fishermen.

Don’t miss

Before you head to Sabang Port, stop off in Legazpi City, and grab one of Bicol’s famous delicacies…chilli flavoured ice cream! The 1st Colonial restaurant serves 3 different strength levels, so if you’re feeling brave, try the volcano strength level.

Where to Stay

There are limited places to stay in the Caramoan, but I had a blast staying at Tugawe Cove. They provide complimentary watersports equipment to explore the surrounding areas.

Plus there is a short hike on the grounds that takes you to the lighthouse, where you can enjoy a picnic and some epic panoramic views.

Kakku Temples in Myanmar

Known for its mesmerising landscapes and iconic hot air balloon rides, Myanmar is one of the most memorable places I’ve visited.

Where?

The usual tourist trail takes you in a loop from the capital Yangon to Bagan, then onto Mandalay and Inle Lake, before returning to Yangon. Travellers rarely venture off this trail but if you have a spare day, then a day trip from Inle Lake to Kakku is a must.

From Nyaung Shwe, the Kakku pagodas are a three hour drive away, however you must break up the journey by stopping at the tourist office in Taunggyi to pay the $3 entrance fee and hire a local English-speaking Pa-O tour guide (this is a requirement by local law and costs $5 per group), but it also a great way to support locals.

Why?

The Kakku pagodas are a collection of nearly 2,500 stupas, located in the foothills of the Shan State. As you pull up to Kakku you’ll instantly be in awe of the thousands of decorated stupas arranged in rows around the main pagoda. You can spend hours roaming this beautiful complex dating back 2000 years.

Highlights

The Kakku Pagoda festival is held during Tabaung, the 12th month of the traditional Burmese calendar (March). The festival lasts 9 days, and involves traditional dances from the Pa-Oh people who also offer food and pay homage to the pagodas.

Time it perfectly so your drive back to Nyaung Shwe, means that you can catch sunset at the Aythaya estate Wine Garden. Probably one of the most beautiful vineyards you will visit in your lifetime, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after a long but fulfilling day.

Where to Stay

As this visit only requires a day trip you can stay in Nyaung Shwe, here are my recommendations for each budget:

  • Affordable: This hostel includes complimentary bicycles to make your way around the Lake (so helpful!)
  • Boutique: Located just a few minutes from the lake this boutique hotel is a great option for those who want to visit the morning floating market.
  • Luxury: There are very few luxury options in Nyaung Shwe, but this beautiful hotel has a pool, spa and plenty of suits to pick from.

The Knuckles Mountains in Sri Lanka

Off the beaten track, and away from the crowds, word of mouth is the best way to find out about the Knuckles Mountains.

Where?

Located in central Sri Lanka, the Knuckles mountains can’t be accessed by public transport. However you can make your way from Kandy to Hunnasiriya, or to Matale, and organise a private 4×4 transport to your accommodation from there.

Lesser known travel hotspots asia

Why?

The Knuckles mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage site that features 34 peaks ranging from 900m to 1900m, of which 5 have a striking resemblance to the knuckles of a clenched fist.

Expect countless rice fields, waterfalls you can jump into, dozens of unique hiking trails, cute colourful towns and the opportunity to spot eagles.

Highlights

The Knuckles mountains are one of the best places to visit during a 10 day trip to Sri Lanka. There are plenty of beautiful trails such as the High Knuckles Trek, Waterfall Trek, Corbett’s Gap trek, and Burnside. It is also a great place to disconnect, as there is no phone signal or WIFI.

Don’t miss

The Heel Oya trek is a tough but fun full day hike that takes you through tea estates, pine forests, terraced paddy fields, waterways, misty hills and even a waterfall you can swim in (bring a towel, swimwear, and water shoes).

Where to Stay

Glamping is the best option in the Knuckles, and this resort does an excellent job of it.

Glamping tents include a double bed, a desk, wardrobe, and an ensuite bathroom with hot water. The resort has electricity for just a few hours a day in the morning and evening via a generator, so be prepared to go off the grid, embrace the beautiful surroundings and leave catching up on your emails for after this experience.

Three meals are served a day, including a BBQ dinner by candlelight (it is BYOB so don’t forget to pick up supplies in Kandy/Sigiriya before heading up to the mountains).

This luxury tent stay, was my favourite experience in Sri Lanka, and is just one of the best reasons to visit Sri Lanka ASAP.

Vang Vieng in Laos

Once upon a time, Vang Vieng was the party capital of Southeast Asia, but in recent years it has reinvented itself as a hub for adventure.

Where?

Vang Vieng is a riverside town in Central Laos, located 3 hours drive from the capital Vientiane and 5 hours drive from the spiritual centre of Luang Prabang.

The town is small enough to walk around, and offers many adventurous things to do, from hot air balloon rides, to kayaking, zip-lining, hiking, paramotoring and even searching for hidden caves.

However if adrenaline isn’t for you, you can experience yoga in the rice fields, learn to cook local Laos cuisine, get a traditional massage, or simply laze around by the pool.

Highlights

Vang Vieng is known for its crystal clear blue lagoons that are great for swimming in during the dry season (October to March). There are currently five blue lagoons in Vang Vieng, and they are located within 15 to 60min tuk tuk rides from the town centre.

One of the best things to do in Vang Vieng is hike to the top of Nam Xay viewpoint. Grab a tuktuk and travel 15 minutes to the starting point of the trail near Blue Lagoon 1.

It takes only 25 minutes to reach the summit, but it is an ascent of 350m so expect to get hot and sweaty. At the top there is a bamboo platform and 2 motorcycles that are great photo opportunities.

Where to Stay

There are plenty of accommodation options in Vang Vieng, but I stayed at this stunning hotel right in the centre of town, which has the comfiest beds I have ever slept in! As well as an infinity pool with an epic view of the mountains.

Mount Bromo is part of the Tengger mountains, located in East Java. Situated 2,329 meters above sea level, the volcano is located between the cities of Malang, Surabaya, and Probolinggo.

The volcano dotted island of Java in Indonesia is often overlooked for the more tropical isles of Bali and Lombok, but those with a sense of adventure will love what it has to offer.

Why?

If you want spectacular views and dramatic landscapes then this active volcano is one of the best to visit in Indonesia. You can get up close and personal if you choose or admire the vistas from afar (or do both like I did!)

Highlights

The elevated view from Mount Penanjakan (2,770 meters), is an incredible way to spend sunrise and experience a panoramic view of the five surrounding volcanos. But do remember to wear plenty of layers, as you’ll have to leave your hotel well before sunrise and the temperature will be very chilly.

Borneo in Malaysia

Borneo boasts beautiful islands and thriving cities, but most travellers are drawn to its rainforests and rare animals.

Where?

Borneo is the third largest island in the world but only 25% of the island is Malaysian territory, the majority belongs to Indonesia and a small amount to Brunei. The best way to explore Malaysian Borneo is to fly into Sandakan, and drive two hours to the wildlife capital of Kinabatangan.

Sai Kung in Hong Kong

Whilst spending a summer living and working in Hong Kong, I learnt the ins and outs of the islands. After a few weekends hitting up the usual tourist trail, I went off the beaten track and explored the greener side of the country.

asia off the beaten destination
underrated places in asia

Where?

There is so much more to this destination than skyscrapers and bright lights, especially if you head out to Sai Kung dubbed the “back garden of Hong Kong”. It is one of 18 districts in Hong Kong, and can be reached by bus from Mong Kok station in 30-40 minutes. It is a breath of fresh air for locals who want to enjoy some solitude, as it is still an area undiscovered by tourists.

Why?

In contrast to the financial district, Sai Kung is known for its sleepy fishing villages, beautiful hiking paths, untouched beaches and slow laidback pace of life. Most of the area is covered in protected country parks so the peninsula remains unspoilt by urbanisation.

Highlights?

There are lots of great trails but the MacLehose Trail is the oldest, and one of the most rewarding in Hong Kong. The 100km path is varied and includes secluded bays, unique coastlines, and even Hong Kong’s highest mountain, Tai Mo Shan.

Don’t miss

Make sure you also visit Sai Kung Town, and explore the busy floating seafood market and the alfresco eateries, and Tai Long Wan Bay, a hidden paradise beach that is great for watersports such as snorkelling, diving, kayaking and surfing.

Where to Stay
