Santa Rosa Beach in Florida
Where: Santa Rosa beach is one of the 30 beach neighborhoods that make up the hidden gem of 30A in Florida.
Located in the Northwest of the state, along the Panhandle, 30A is situated in between Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City Beach.
Why: Santa Rosa Beach has some of the most powdery white sand you will experience anywhere in the world.
Derived from quartz crystal from the Appalachian mountains, this unique sand is enough of a reason to visit!
If you want to have a really special beach experience, book a luxury picnic and bonfire.
It includes charcuterie boards displayed on a handcrafted table, surrounded by lounging pillows, blankets, flowers, and candles.
You can even add a guitar player to serenade you, or end the evening with s’mores over a beach bonfire.
Best time to visit: Spring is a great time as the temperatures aren’t too high and you can enjoy all the outdoor activities that are on offer such as cycling the Timpoochee Trail, or hiking in Point Washington State Forest.

White Pocket Arizona
Where: White Pocket Arizona is one of the most beautiful places in the USA. It is located off the beaten path in Northern Arizona, near the border of Utah in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.
You’ll need a high clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle and some experience driving in soft sand to get there. Thankfully, tours are available if you aren’t feeling up to the drive.
White Pocket is accessible from either Kanab, Utah, or Page, Arizona. Either way, it takes about 2 hours each way to reach this beautiful otherworldly location.
Why: The natural formations and landscapes you will see at White Pocket will blow you away.
Some sections, resemble the brain, and others look like rashers of bacon! So take time to wander around the area and see what you can find.
Best time to visit: Spring and fall are perfect, when the temperatures are cooler but not too cold. Try to visit earlier in the day or later in the evening if you go in the summer as there is no shade.
Don’t miss: If you are planning a trip to see the Mighty 5 in Utah or a trip to visit Lake Powell, add on a day trip to White Pocket. You won’t be disappointed.

Where: One of the southwest’s best hidden gems is Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.
Located one hour northeast of Las Vegas, this stunning landscape of red rocks and slot canyons is often overlooked by visitors more concerned with Utah’s amazing national parks.
But the Las Vegas region has some stunning natural wonders itself. A visit to Valley of Fire will have you questioning why you didn’t spend more time outdoors on that trip to Vegas!
Why: Valley of Fire is a collection of spectacular red sandstone rock formations that bleed into tan, white, and gray limestone rocks. It’s a small park that is easy to explore in a half or full day trip from Las Vegas.
A vehicle is required to get to Valley of Fire and entry is $15, but if you don’t have a rental car, you can take one of numerous organized day tours to the park from the city.
Best time to visit: You’ll want to visit in the Spring or Fall, as summer temperatures in the Mojave Desert can be brutal, and some of the best hikes are closed for the summer months.
Winter can be pleasant but results in short days and the park closes at sunset.

Watkins Glen State Park in New York
Where: One of the best hidden gems in the US, Watkins Glen State Park is a stunning oasis of waterfalls, natural stone bridges, and mesmerizing gorges that can be found within the Finger Lakes region of New York.
In fact, the park is located right near Seneca Lake and is best reached by flying into Elmira Corning Regional Airport (ELM) and driving 35 minutes to the park from there.
Alternatively, travelers could fly into Albany International Airport, grab a rental car, and then drive 3.5 hours to the park.
Why: Make your way along the Gorge Trail which will take you under stunning stone bridges and past 19 different waterfalls.
In total, it’s an easy, 3 mile out and back hike that will take you around an hour to complete. Just be sure to wear good hiking shoes since the stone steps can get slippery.
Best time to visit: Travelers should also plan to visit in the fall when the area’s foliage is at it’s most vibrant.
In particular, the first two weeks in October are ideal since the Gorge trail does close towards the end of the month.
Don’t miss: Visitors also cannot leave the region without exploring the nearby Corning Glass Museum and visiting some of the best wineries in the Finger Lakes along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
Where to stay: Spend the night at the Fainting Goat Island Inn in nearby Nichols, NY.

Kenwood Cherry Blossoms in Maryland
Where: Located 30 minute drive from Washington DC, the Kenwood cherry blossoms in Bethesda, Maryland.
While the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms are more well known, the Kenwood cherry blossoms are more of a local secret.
Why: While there are things to do in Bethesda all year long, Spring brings color back to the area in the form of the beautiful cherry blossom trees.
If you miss the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms, you may be in luck as these bloom a little bit after the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms.
Best time to visit: While the exact dates change each year for peak bloom, the Kenwood blossoms are usually in full effect at the beginning of April or the very end of March.
Where to stay: If you are already visiting Washington DC, there are a wide range of hotels in DC ranging from one star to five star for a range of budgets.
The Hay-Adams is a beautiful luxury hotel, but just down the street is a Residence Inn by Marriott for a lower priced option.
Bethesda also has a good number of options for places to stay. The Embassy Suites by Hilton located on the south side of town puts you closer to DC while still being near the Bethesda cherry blossoms.

Stanley in Idaho
Where: To reach Stanley, Idaho you’ll need to fly into Boise and drive two hours and 45 minutes northeast to the tiny town.
Why: Stanley is the gateway to the rugged Sawtooth Mountains, whose jagged peaks rival the much more famous Grand Tetons.
Stanley is the perfect getaway for any outdoor adventure lover, with incredible hiking trails, epic white water rafting, and literally hundreds of lakes to kayak or stand up paddleboard on.
Best of all, Stanley has tons of natural hot springs, where you can relax in the steamy water and take in the alpine views around you.
Best time to visit: The best time to visit is in the Summer, when the high elevation hikes will be snow-free, the weather is warm for water activities, and the rivers are high enough to enjoy rafting adventures.
Don’t miss: Stanley’s quirkiest hot spring, is Boatbox Hot Springs, located along the banks of the Salmon River.
Boatbox consists of an old mining cauldron, with steamy water piped in from a nearby hot spring. To regulate the tub’s extremely hot temperature, you’ll need to add icy water from the nearby river (using a bucket that’s tied to the cauldron).
Once you get the temperature just right, you’ll have your very own (very unique!) hot tub in a stunningly beautiful natural setting.
Where to stay: Stanley’s Mountain Village Lodge isn’t exactly luxurious, but it provides something incredibly special- its own private (and Instagrammable) hot spring!

Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah
Where: Another amazing hidden gem in the USA is Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah.
This park is adjacent to Canyonlands National Park, so it has many of the same epic views, but less crowds. For a nature lover, this park is a must-visit!
Why: The best view in this park is a large double ‘U’ canyon made by the Colorado River winding through the red rocks – think famous Horseshoe Bend, but double!
You can walk right up to the canyon and hike several trails along the rim to soak in the view.
Best time to visit: Since this park is in the middle of the southwest desert, visit in the Spring or Fall for the most temperate weather. Summers can be excruciatingly hot and winters quite cold.
Don’t miss: Make sure you visit at sunset. The golden hour light adds an extra glow to the beautiful red and orange rocks.
Where to stay: Dead Horse Point State Park is an easy 40-minute drive from Moab, a decent sized town in eastern Utah full of restaurants and hotel options!

Maine Coast
Where: Fly to Portland airport in the state of Maine, or Boston airport in Massachusetts. From there, you can do a road trip and drive along the whole coast, taking in all of the wonderful views.
Why: The state of Maine has some of the most beautiful and dramatic coastlines in the United States, but because of its somewhat remote location, it’s still full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered by tourism.
There are a total of 65 historic Maine lighthouses along the coast, and lots of great family friendly hiking trails in places like Acadia National Park.
Best time to visit: Summer weather is best, but spring can also be a great time to visit Maine with less tourists.
In the fall, you can see beautiful leaf colors all over the state, including Acadia and other places along the coast.
Don’t miss: Acadia National Park and the many lighthouses of Maine. Especially the Portland Head Light, which is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and one of the most remarkable spots in the United States.
Or, if you want to see a less popular lighthouse, visit the red and white striped lighthouse at West Quoddy Head, which is the easternmost point in the continental United States!
Where to stay: The Bar Harbor Grand Hotel is a great option on Mount Desert Island, with easy driving access to Acadia National Park and other nice spots on the coast!

Door County in Wisconsin
Where: Door County, Wisconsin is a hidden gem that’s nestled on a peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan.
The closest airport is the Austin Straubel Airport in Green Bay which is 1 hour away.
Why: From cozy cafes and breweries to renowned art galleries, orchards and vineyards – there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Best time to visit: Summer is the most popular time to visit Door County, as this is when the weather is the nicest. However, fall is arguably the most beautiful.
The fall foliage in Door County is astounding, and its many parks offer incredible leaf-peeping opportunities.
Don’t miss: When you’re in Door County, you can’t miss attending a traditional Door County fish boil – they’re delicious and also fun to watch!
Hitting the trails in Cave Point County Park and White Fish Dunes State Park is also a must.
Door County is also known for its many wineries, you can’t leave without doing at least one tasting. (Door 44 Winery is one of the highest-rated wineries in the area.)
Where to stay: One of the best places to stay in Door County is The Dörr Hotel in Sister Bay. It’s one of the newest hotels in the area and blends modern style with Door County’s local heritage.

Fredericksburg in Texas
Where: Fredericksburg, Texas is in the beautiful Hill Country in Central Texas.
Located just 1 hour 30 min from Austin and 1 hour 15 min from San Antonio, Fredericksburg can be easily accessed by airports in either city.
Why: Fredericksburg is a charming town that beckons visitors with its beautiful Main Street, several wineries, and German culture and history.
In addition to browsing The Pioneer Museum and National Museum of the Pacific War, wine tasting at Grape Creek Vineyards, and eating delicious food at many restaurants, outdoor activities are also numerous.
Climbing Enchanted Rock or visiting the Wildseed Farms, the largest wildflower farm in the country, should be on every itinerary.
Best time to visit: The best time to visit Fredericksburg is in the early to mid-Spring.
Late March through April brings perfect weather and the hills come alive with wildflowers, including the beautiful Texas bluebonnets.
Don’t miss: Every traveler to Fredericksburg should try the local German fare for a taste of the town’s history.
Old German Bakery & Restaurant is the perfect spot to stop for a breakfast of German pancakes and sausage!

Kesugi Ridge in Alaska
Where: Alaska is home to amazing scenery and Kesugi Ridge is a local hidden gem.
Situated in Denali State Park with a better view of Denali than the first 40 miles of Denali National Park, most visitors plan a multi-day backpacking trip along the Kesugi Ridge Trail.
Why: Kesugi Ridge is great for anyone who loves hiking and families of all ages regularly are seen on the trail.
You’ll have a chance to see moose, caribou, bald eagles and bears throughout the hike. Be sure to bring bear spray and be bear aware throughout your trip.
Best time to visit: The best time to go to Kesugi Ridge is during summer from June to August.
But if you’re up for a winter adventure you might find snow here from September until May.
Don’t miss: You can easily do a day trip anywhere from the Curry Ridge at Kesugi Ken Campground to Little Coal Creek where north to south hikers begin their trek.The initial hike up the ridge is the hardest part since you gain all of the elevation in the first few miles before popping out of the treeline. Once you get above the trees you’ll be hoping for clear skies because Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, will be in full view!
Where to stay: Camping in a tent or cabin is the best way to get the most out of this gem. There are public cabins that need to be reserved well ahead of time at Kegugi Ken and Byer’s Lake.
There are public campsites that can also be reserved near each cabin. If you’re backpacking the ridge you can rent everything you need from REI in Anchorage or Fairbanks (wherever you fly into).

San Juan Islands in Washington
Where: The San Juan Islands are in Washington State, off Seattle, where the main airport Sea-Tac International Airport is located.
Once in Seattle, you can board a small plane to some of the four main islands: San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Shaw Island, and Lopez Island.
However, the most popular way is to take the ferry from Anacortes. The drive from Seattle to Anacortes takes about 1.5 hours, and you can easily add the San Juan Islands as part of your Washington State road trip.
Why: The San Juan Islands are known for their incredible landscape typical of the Pacific Northwest region: thick forests, long beaches, and rugged mountains. Things to do on the San Juan Islands vary from island to island.
On San Juan Island, visit the Whale Museum, and stroll the San Juan Island National Historical Park and its 19th-century British and American Camps.
One of the popular activities is kayaking from Friday Harbor, the island’s main town.
Orcas Island is the largest of the San Juan Islands and is home to the Orcas Island Historical Museum, a great place to learn about the island’s history.
Drive along the Orcas Island Loop Road, and stop at the Moran State Park, where you can hike up to Mount Constitution for 360° views of the islands.
Best time to visit: April to October is the best time to travel to the San Juan Islands when temperatures range from 67°F to 71°F.
Don’t miss: Lopez Island is a favorite for bike riders, and Shawn Island features a 19th-century Little Red Schoolhouse, the longest-running school in the State of Washington.

Eureka Springs in Arkansas
Where: Eureka Springs is in the northwest corner of Arkansas in the Ozark Mountains. The closest airport is in Branson, Missouri, about thirty miles away.
Why: This small town in the Ozark Mountains is on the National Register of Historic Places–the entire town. None of the streets intersect at right angles, and there isn’t a single stoplight.
Best time to visit: One reason to visit Eureka Springs is to see the beautiful Victorian-era architecture.
It’s charm makes this a particularly attractive destination for couples, especially during spring when the temperatures are balmy. Fall is also a great time to visit.
The humidity of summer is gone, and the leaves turn gorgeous colors.
Don’t miss: Eureka Springs is also a popular spot for outdoor activities, especially at nearby Beaver Lake. Like many towns with beautiful settings, this one draws artists, and there are several galleries.
Animal lovers will want to visit Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, which provides a safe home for abused, abandoned, and neglected big cats and other large animals.
Where to stay: One of the best things to do in Eureka Springs is to visit the 1886 Crescent Hotel. Although it opened as a luxury hotel, it later became a hospital, and is reported to be haunted.

Where: Gardens of the Gods is a stunning park in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is about half an hour’s drive from the Colorado Springs Airport, just over an hour from Denver without traffic.
The park is open daily from 9-6, and there is no entrance fee.
Why: Gardens of the Gods is special because of its unique and captivating rock formations.
These formations are made up of red, pink, and white sandstone and are thought to have been formed over 300 million years ago.
The park is perfect for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers alike.
From the hiking trails, visitors will get breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, so its easy to see why this park is a must for your Colorado road trip itinerary.
Best time to visit: During the spring and summer when the weather is mild, and the park is in full bloom.

Where: Near the freshwater shoreline of Michigan’s Gold Coast, Holland is a US hidden gem where chill “lake life” vibes are a way of life and Dutch roots run deep.
Located about 35 miles from the Grand Rapids airport (GRR) and less than a three hour drive from Chicago and Detroit, this charming West Michigan city is ideal for family vacations and romantic getaways from either Midwest metropolis.
Why: While visiting Holland, you can walk along seemingly boundless stretches of golden sand beaches or through fields with hundreds of thousands of tulips.
On the same day, sail past Big Red, the most photographed lighthouse in the Great Lakes State, and climb to the top floor of a working Dutch windmill.

Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota
Where: Voyageurs National Park is located in northern Minnesota along the Canadian border, so getting there takes some effort.
Expect a 2.5 hour drive from Duluth, or a 4.5 hour drive from Minneapolis. Alternately, a couple of airlines fly into the smaller Falls International Airport, which is a 30-minute drive from Kabetogama Visitor Center.
Why: The geography of Voyageurs is unique among national parks. More than one-third of the park consists of water, with 30 lakes nestled between nearly 1000 islands.
This is one of the best places in the continental U.S. to see bald eagles. More than 40 nesting pairs have been documented inside the park. They can be seen regularly in the tall trees that stand along the water.
Best time to visit: Summer provides the best weather, with average high temperatures from June through August ranging from 72-76° F (22-24° C). Many of the boat tours only operate in the summer.
Don’t miss: For the best chance of seeing bald eagles, book one of the official Voyageurs boat tours which take guests around Kabetogama Lake to some of the remote islands in the park.
The Grand Tour gives visitors a chance to see as much of the park as possible.
Where to stay: Those who aren’t interested in camping at one of the private campgrounds in the area should stay at a hotel in International Falls, such as the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites.

Dismals Canyon in Alabama
Where: Dismals Canyon is one of the best hidden vacation spots in USA. Located in the small town of Phil Campbell in Northwest Alabama.
The Huntsville International Airport is located just 73 miles away making it the perfect day trip or weekend getaway.
Why: Dismals Canyon is a privately owned 85-acre National Landmark where visitors can hike, camp, and view the unique Dismalites (blue glow worms).
The 1.5-mile trail meanders through mossy canyons, past beautiful waterfalls, and over swinging bridges. While visiting, you can check out the trail during the day and then return for a guided night tour to catch a glimpse of the glow worms.
Best time to visit: The canyon is open between March and November, but the best time to see the Dismalites is between April and May or September and October.
If visiting during October, be sure to check out some of the nearby waterfalls and hikes in North Alabama as they are even more beautiful with the colorful leaves.
Don’t miss: Although the canyon is beautiful during the day, you do not want to miss the guided night tour.
You do need a reservation for the night tour, so be sure to plan ahead and make this before visiting. If you reserve a campsite, the night tour is included.
Where to stay: There are 6 campsites and 2 cabins available onsite. If those are already reserved, the Bankhead National Forest is nearby with many other campsites available.
If camping is not your thing, you can stay in one of the many hotels in Huntsville.

Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia
Where: Grayson Highlands State Park is located in Southwest Virginia. This gem is a two hour drive from major airports in Roanoke, Virginia and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Why: This state park wows with grassy balds, alpine meadows, high peaks and free-roaming wild ponies.
At Grayson Highlands State Park, dozens of wild ponies have been roaming across this rugged state park since the 1940’s.
Wild ponies are often seen along the iconic Appalachian Trail, which crosses the north section of this state park.
This stretch of white-blazed trail runs to the state’s high point, Mount Rogers, and beyond as it meanders south all the way to Georgia.
Wild ponies are the main attraction, but Grayson Highlands is also known for fishing, bouldering and hiking.
An easy loop hike guides visitors to two of Virginia’s highest peaks: Big Pinnacle and Little Pinnacle. Both wow with far-reaching views across the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Best time to visit: The white and brown ponies roam year-round, so there is no bad time to visit Grayson Highlands State Park.
Summer is especially popular with backpackers who set up tents on the high elevation grassy areas. Note that the visitor center is closed from November through April.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park in North Carolina
Where: Norfolk International Airport (NIA) is the airport that is closest to the Northern region of the Outer Banks, where Jockey’s Ridge can be found.
Once arriving, renting a car is the best option. If you’d like to drive onto some of the beaches, having a truck with four-wheel drive is a must.
Why: Jockey’s Ridge State Park has the largest live sand dune and one of the best free attractions in The Outer Banks, which is situated in North Carolina. It makes you feel like you’re in the desert.
Aside from looking unworldly for North Carolina, this attraction gained its popularity because this was the location the Wright Brothers practiced to take the first man-powered flight back in 1900 and successfully completed it.
This totally transformed the trajectory of transportation and flights and impacted the way that we use airplanes today.
Best time to visit: Jockeys Ridge is great to visit all season long, but if you’re hoping to avoid the crowds, then planning your trip in Fall or Spring is a great option.
The Outer Banks is primarily a beautiful beach destination, so it sees most of its tourists in the summer.

Leipers Fork in Tennessee
Where: One of the coolest hidden gems in the USA can be found just a 30-40 minute drive from Nashville in Tennessee in the small, countryside community of Leipers Fork.
Why: What’s special about this destination is that you’re surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside and would never know you’re in a hotspot for music and celebrities not to mention great distilleries, food, shops, and a community that is really passionate about historic preservation.

Where: Solvang, is a fairytale town in California on the west coast of the USA, and is a fantastic place to visit for all age groups.
The nearest International airport is Los Angeles, and Solvang is located 128 miles away.
Why: Danish Americans developed this region in 1911, so the city is set in Danish style. Santa Ynez mountains on the USA’s western coast surround this little Danish town.

Providence Canyon State Park in Georgia
Where: Providence Canyon State Park is located in the small town of Lumpkin, Georgia. It’s about a 50-minute drive from Columbus, Georgia.
Why: Providence Canyon is home to impressive hikes through colorful canyons (some are 150 ft. deep), stunning views, and scenery that is vastly different than the rest of Georgia.

Black Hills in South Dakota
Where: The Black Hills are located in western South Dakota near the border of Wyoming. The closest airport is Grand Rapids, and it’s very small. It’s the closest city as well.
Why: Though much of South Dakota is flatlands covered in corn, the Black Hills are a beautiful and diverse topography.
Best time to visit: June through August is the most popular time to visit. If you want good weather with fewer crowds, go in April, May, September, and October.
The Custer State Park bison roundup is in late September, and it draws large crowds.
Don’t miss: Of course, you’ll visit Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, but don’t miss Custer State Park. This incredible park has it all, including forests, stunning rock formations, lakes, and grasslands.
You’ll see a lot of animals and can do a self-drive safari. Take some time just to drive around the winding roads of the Black Hills or go for a hike.

North Shore of Massachusetts
Where: To get to the North Shore, you can fly into Boston’s Logan Airport and either drive or take the commuter rail to one of the many coastal towns. Each has its own personality.
Why: When you think of coastal Massachusetts, many travelers’ minds go to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, or Nantucket.
But if you head northward instead, the coastline between Boston and the New Hampshire border — Massachusetts’s North Shore — is full of hidden gems.

Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio
Where: Hocking Hills State Park is located southeast of Columbus, Ohio. Fly into John Glenn International Airport, rent a car, and you’ll be at the park in just over an hour.
Why: It may be close to a big city, but it won’t take long to feel like you have been transported to a new world as you start exploring this area.
While there is plenty to do nearby, the star of the show is the hiking trails, where you’ll be immersed in nature and surrounded by towering trees and huge rock formations.

Where: Newport is a beautiful, small beach town located along the coast of Oregon. It’s known for its quaint nature and picturesque beaches.
The closest airport to Newport is Portland International Airport. The drive from Portland to Newport is about 143 miles due southwest and would take 2.5 hours.
Why: Newport is one of the best cities to visit if you’re looking for a good mix of family-friendly activities along with great beaches, lighthouses, and outdoor adventures.
There are so many fun things to do in Newport, Oregon, like visiting the Devils Punchbowl.
Best time to visit: Oregon is often cloudy and rainy throughout the year. That said, summer is the most comfortable time to visit Newport, weather-wise.

Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park in Hawaii
Where: One of the most underrated national parks to visit on the Big Island of Hawaii is Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park. It is located on the Kona side of the Big Island.
Why: A truly historic national park, you will find a variety of monuments and ancient temples or heiau that makes it an important park on the Big Island to visit to see the ancient sites along the coastlines of this part of West Hawaii.
Kaloko Honokohau is an ancient Hawaiian settlement that has important cultural sites to visit that includes temples or heiau, fish ponds, house platforms, petroglyps and stone walls.
Best time to visit: Although the Big Island is a year round destination, the best times to actually visit are spring and fall which is the should season.
There are less visitors and the weather is almost perfect with beautiful mild weather in the mid 80s.
Don’t miss: Go to the visitors center to get oriented and then hike to the main fish ponds and then to the Honokohau settlement. Also, you can combine this with some beach fun since there’s a nice beach area you can enjoy on the coastline.
You’ll be able to find local wildlife to include with Honu turtles, tropical fish and other wildlife and native birds that can be spotted in the area.
Where to stay: Less than 5 miles drive will get you to downtown Kona where you can find plenty of hotels to stay while exploring the area. A favorite is the King Kamehameda hotel located right on the beachfront in downtown Kona.
