Peru isn’t all about Machu Picchu, in fact there are plenty of unexpected gems. Huacachina was the most memorable for me.
I was hiking in Colca Canyon getting in some much needed practise for the Inca trail, when I met a German girl who refused to let me leave Peru without visiting this desert oasis. She might have been exaggerating  but I had to see it for myself. I carved a few days out and set off for my detour to the Ica desert, in the southern part of Peru.
She wasn’t wrong, Huacachina looked like something out of Aladdin! After hours of driving through an empty desert we reached a desert oasis framed by tall dunes and palm trees.
I stayed for two nights, and managed to fit in some hammock time between the array of desert activities on offer from sand boarding (more like sand sledging in my case), dune buggying and sunset dune hikes.
